The Ramboll Foundation supports emergency relief efforts in Myanmar

On March 28, a deadly earthquake and strong aftershock occurred near Mandalay, Myanmar, killing more than 3,800 and affecting an estimated 17 million people. The Ramboll Foundation has donated DKK 250,000 (USD 37,600) to the NGO, CARE, and their locally led shelter activities.

The two powerful quakes (7.7 and 6.4 magnitude, respectively) caused damage as far away as Bangkok, Thailand. At least 3,800 people have died and more than 5,100 been injured – a preliminary casualty toll that is certain to rise as the full extent of the catastrophe becomes known. Damage to bridges, roads, housing, hospitals, mosques, schools, and water systems has prompted a state of emergency in affected provinces.

Building on three decades of experience in Myanmar, CARE’s locally led approach – with 20 existing partners across Myanmar – enables them to deliver an immediate response. CARE has launched a rapid humanitarian assessment, and they are coordinating with the U.N. and other humanitarian agencies to ensure aid reaches the most at-risk, especially women and girls.

This disaster has only worsened an already fragile situation. CARE and our partners are urgently assessing the damage and preparing to support affected communities.

CARE’s crisis response includes multi-purpose cash assistance, restoring water access and repairing broken water systems, ensuring food security and nutrition, access to healthcare and medicine, and overall protection and violence prevention.

The Ramboll Foundation will support CARE’s shelter activities, which includes housing solutions for displaced families, construction materials, emergency shelter kits, clothing, and other essential household items.

An essential part of our philanthropy work is centred on helping to rebuild areas affected by major crises, and we are pleased to be able to assist CARE in their emergency relief efforts in Myanmar and not least to the millions of people affected by the earthquakes. We know how important these rebuilding efforts are, and we will continue to follow the local developments closely.
