The Ramboll Foundation supports “Building Back Resilient” training initiative

Titled “Building Back Resilient: Regenerative Building Damage Assessment and Repair in Ukraine,” this initiative is launched by RedR UK and aims to support the recovery and reconstruction efforts in war-affected areas of Ukraine by equipping local professionals with vital technical skills.

Dnipro, Ukraine - A year after a missile struck a nine-story residential building in Dnipro, Ukrainian Red Cross volunteers who responded remember it like it was yesterday.
“Another volunteer and I were working in one of the districts of our city when we heard the explosion,” said Natalya Rubcke a volunteer with the Dnipro Red Cross Emergency Response Team.
“It was a mess at first, everyone was running around, crying, screaming.”
The team provided first aid, psychosocial support, set up a safe place for people who lost their homes.
“The fact that we can help people by providing some kind of assistance and support, by doing something for people, is what inspires us to continue working, that's why we are volunteers.”
The Ukrainian Red Cross is working hard to provide emergency services to those impacted by the ongoing fighting, while also supporting the recovery and reconstruction efforts in many parts of Ukraine.

The Mayor of Mykolaiv has identified capacity strengthening as a critical priority for the region. In response, and in partnership with Engineers Without Borders Denmark, Ramboll UK, and Arup, RedR UK will provide high-quality, free training in building damage assessment and repair. Participants will include Ukrainian engineers, university lecturers, and final-year engineering students.

A key component of the programme is a train-the-trainer approach: university lecturers will be empowered to pass on their knowledge to future cohorts of engineers, creating sustainable, long-term capacity within the country.

This project directly addresses the shortage of qualified professionals needed to assess and repair damaged infrastructure - an urgent issue as Ukraine looks to rebuild and safely resettle displaced populations. By strengthening local technical expertise, we aim to enhance community resilience, promote the safe re-use of built structures, and contribute to a recovery process that restores safety, health, and dignity.

In total, the project will train approximately 170 participants, laying the groundwork for widespread, regenerative rebuilding efforts across Ukraine.

The initiative is funded with GBP 67,928.
