Urban Mind: A research project on the well-being of teenage girls in the urban environment.

Current urbanization rates indicate that by 2050 70% of the population will reside in cities, making urban areas the consequential site for generating social impact and deconstructing existing social structures that limit user groups. While the well-being of urban residents stands as a pivotal component of a socially sustainable city, studies reveal a concerning trend: the mental health of girls and young women living in cities is deteriorating.

Unfortunately, within the field of urban design, the diverse needs of this demographic are, at best, oversimplified. There is a pressing need for urban design to better accommodate the diverse needs of its users, providing spaces where everyone can thrive. Urban Mind set out to address these issues, envisioning a future that prioritizes the well-being and empowerment of young women.

The team created two open-source guides containing design principles and methodologies for participation processes in designing urban spaces with the well-being of teenage girls in mind.

The project is a collaboration between Henning Larsen and the Danish National Institute of Public Health, with the support of the Ramboll Foundation.
